The craftsmanship of Fuchu furniture bridges the past and the future.

300 years since the Edo period. The craftsmanship honed in Fuchu, a region renowned for producing the finest chests of drawers, has now been refined into new forms that harmonize with modern lifestyles.

This program is a journey through the Wakaba Furniture Museum that traces the “path of evolution” and allows you to experience the spirit of the artisans through the traditional technique of “Arigumi” (dovetail joint construction), which uses not a single nail.

Feel the breath of the materials and shape them with your own hands. Through time spent engaging with the quiet passion of the makers, this plan offers a special experience found only here, where the local “way of life” resonates with the sensibilities of our guests.

*1  A limited-edition tour tracing the history of Fuchu furniture—dating back to the Edo period (300 years ago)—and its evolution into contemporary design.

*2 A hands-on experience with “ari-gumi(dovetail joint construction),” the precise, distortion-free wood-joining technique that has defined Fuchu furniture.

*3  Craft your own one-of-a-kind, lifetime-quality tray using the finest paulownia wood.

*4 After the workshop, enjoy a special coffee break chatting with our staff in a space filled with the scent of wood.

Wakabakagu's Craftsmanship(Vol 1): Designing “Everyday Tools” That Blend Seamlessly into Modern Life

Founded in 1947. Through collaboration with designer Makoto Koizumi, we have elevated traditional furniture-making techniques to meet contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. Going beyond mere furniture, we propose functional beauty as “tools for daily living” that accompany our daily routines and enrich our lives.

Wakabakagu's Craftsmanship(Vol 2): The Harmony of Artisanal Skills and Cutting-Edge Technology

We combine millimeter-level precision achieved with state-of-the-art Numerical Control machines with the delicate craftsmanship of skilled artisans, who rely on their five senses. This hybrid process underpins the quality of our products—truly “lifetime pieces” that will be cherished for generations to come.

Fuchu Furniture

Japan’s premier furniture-making region, with a history dating back to the Edo period. Once renowned for its top-quality wedding chests, its craftsmanship is praised for being “seamless and warp-free,” and continues to be passed down today as the pinnacle of Japan’s woodworking culture, a source of pride for the nation.

"Ari-gumi"(Ant-Head Joint/Dovetail joint)

A wood-joining technique modeled after the shape of an ant’s head. This traditional method involves interlocking the convex and concave surfaces of trapezoidal pieces to create a joint without using a single nail. Through the process of crafting a paulownia tray, you can experience firsthand the sturdiness and structural beauty born from the wisdom of our ancestors, who possessed a deep understanding of wood’s properties.
